Westland Farmer’s Market open
The new Farmer’s Market in Westland is open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. every Thursday in the parking lot of the Westland Shopping Center.
The market will continue through October.
The shopping center is located at 35000 N. Warren Road.
Volunteer gardener’s needed
The Westland DTE Energy Community Garden needs volunteers from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays for weeding and harvesting the food being grown. All the produce grown is donated to Gleaners food Bank to be distributed to children, seniors, disabled people, working families and others in need.
Volunteers should bring their own gardening tools, wear sunscreen, bring drinking water and closed-tow shoes.
The garden is located at 38155 Cherry Hill Road, but volunteers are asked to use the Avondale Street entrance.
Museum exhibits past, present and future
The summer exhibit at the Belleville Area Museum is titled Main Street, Belleville: Past, Present and Future.
The exhibit will focus on photographic images of Main Street across three centuries.
The museum is located at 405 Main St. in downtown Belleville and is open from noon until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Admission is 41 for adults and 50 cents for children.

Summer programs offered in Romulus
The City of Romulus Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registration for several summer programs, including funcercize, hypnotherapy, cheerleading, pickleball, soccer, Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, tennis, belly dancing, kites, basketball and many others.

Health and Wellness expo set
A Health and Wellness Expo is planned from noon until 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at the September Days Senior Center in Van Buren Township.
Topics include how to get and stay healthy, affordable and gracious housing, after-care and assisted living and other senior services. There will be activities, exhibits and health screenings.
There will be a free catered dinner, door prize drawings and dancing.

Senior picnic planned
The Annual Senior Picnic sponsored by the City of Inkster Commission of Aging will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at Wheatley Park.
Reservations are required although admission is free and open to all Inkster senior citizens.
There will be food, fun and prizes awarded for the best tropical attire.

Whalers game scores for autism
The Plymouth Whalers will skate in an alumni game at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at Compuware Arena in Plymouth. The event is a benefit for The Hope For Autism Foundation and will include alumni Chad LaRose, James Neal, David Legwand, James Wisniewski and Jared Boll.
Tickets for the game are $10 and include admission to the meet-and-greet autograph session which begins at 2:30.

Caddyshack golf outing set
The Friends of Fellows Creek Golf Club will host the Caddyshack Golf Outing beginning at noon on Sunday, Aug. 8. Proceeds from the event will be used for course improvement projects and upgrades.
The event include 18 holes of golf, lunch on the patio sponsored by UAW Region 1A, contests and an awards dinner. Check in begins at noon with a scramble start at 1 p.m. after lunch. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The $75 donation included golf, a cart, lunch and dinner. Non-playing individuals can attend the dinner for $40.

Lucky Ducky race planned
The first-ever Lucky Ducky Rubber Duckie Race on Belleville Lake will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 when 1,000 rubber ducks will be floating on the water.
The event is sponsored by the Belleville Area Historical Society and the Belleville Rotary Cub and will take place immediately following the annual Bridge Walk at the Taste of Belleville event.
Ducks will race from the Denton Road bridge to the Belleville Road bridge and can be purchased for $5 each or five for $20. They can be purchased at the Belleville Area Museum, Fred C. Fischer Library, Main Street Flowers, Johnny’s Grill, Sumpter Township Police Station, Van Buren Township Clerk’s office or from any Belleville Rotary Club member. All proceeds benefit the Belleville Area Museum.
Prizes, awarded to winning ducks, include $250 in cash and gift certificates from several local businesses.

Grief counseling offered
Free grief support for anyone suffering a loss is offered at the Brown Family Center in Belleville.
Counselor Mary Martinez is a graduate of Madonna University with a degree in hospice educations specializing in bereavement. Participants need not have gone through the Brown Funeral Home.
In addition to one-on-one counseling and support groups, books, handouts, booklets and brochures are available.

Group plans anniversary celebration
The American Progressive Association will mark the 69th anniversary of the group with a week-end of events beginning Aug. 13 at the T.J. Coleman Community Center in Romulus.
From 6 until 9 p.m. on Aug. 13, D.J. Roy Williams will supply music for ballroom dancing during a meet and greet event. There will also be games and refreshments.
From noon until 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, the group will host an all-day festival with games, food, music, a live band and a car show.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, a gospel celebration will begin which will include church choirs and other guests. Visitors are asked to bring their own lawn chairs for this event which will continue until 8 p.m.

Church to host sale
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will be the site of a trunk and Mom2Mom sale from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Aug. 14.
There will also be baked goods and clothing for sale at the event.
Trunk sale participants can park their cars in the parking lot and sell from the trunk of the vehicle. Church members can rent one space for $10 and non-members will pay $15. This includes one spot for the vehicle and one for the table or wares. Additional spots are available for another $10. all funds raised from the rental fees will be used for service work at organizations like the Salvation Army, Bolde Food and Clothing Center, Wayne County Family Center and to fill Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for the needy in the Wayne-Westland school district.

Training for ushers slated
Mandatory training sessions for volunteer ushers at the Cherry Hill Theater are planned from 6 until 8 p.m. Aug. 16 and from 10 a.m. until noon Aug. 19 from 6 until 8 p.m. Aug 25 and from 10 a.m. until noon Aug. 28.
The Village Theater is actively seeking new volunteer ushers for the upcoming entertainment season. Volunteers greet patrons, take tickets, distribute programs, lead tours, help with hospitality and concessions and other duties. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have the ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

Chamber hosts golf outing
The Greater Romulus Chamber of Commerce annual golf outing is planned for Aug. 19 at Gateway Golf Course.
Cost for the event is $110 per player and $440 per foursome. Tickets for dinner and the door prize drawing only are $40.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with a continental breakfast. There will be a shotgun start at 11 a.m.

Symphony auditions slated
Auditions for the Celebration Youth Orchestras, a sponsored project of the Plymouth Symphony, will take place by appointment Aug. 27 at Evola Music on Haggerty Road in Canton Township.
The Celebration Youth Orchestras are under the direction of award winning conductor Nan Washburn and include musicians from Plymouth, Canton, Northville, Novi, Belleville, Westland and throughout western Wayne County. Currently there are three orchestras and a flute choir. The youth orchestras perform in two major concerts at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton. Weekly Tuesday evening rehearsals take place at the Plymouth Community Arts Council building on Sheldon Road.

Senior Nutrition Extravaganza planned
The Senior Alliance and Wayne County Senior Citizen Services will host a Senior Nutrition Extravaganza at the Romulus Senior Center beginning at 11 a.m. Aug. 27.
The event is free and open to residents of Wayne County who are 60 years of age or older. There is no cost for the luncheon and activities, but reservations are required.

County sets hazardous waste day
Wayne County Department of Environment will sponsor a Hazardous Waste Collection from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Aug. 28 at Westland Shopping Center.
The event is free and open to all Wayne County residents. County workers will accept and dispose of waste that is considered toxic, flammable or corrosive.
Only household products from Wayne County residents will be accepted. No commercial waste, industrial waste, radioactive materials, explosives, ammunition, 55-galoon drums, refrigerators, microwaves or appliance, tires or concrete will be accepted.
The event will take place in the center parking lot behind JCPenney.

Senior transportation available
Transportation for senior citizens is available for Van Buren Township senior citizens between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Reservations must be made 48 hours in advance by calling the Senior Center Transportation Line at (734) 699-8945.
Rides in the local Van Buren Township Belleville area cost $2 each way. Rides to destinations out of the local area but within 25 miles cost $5 each way. Lunch pickups are priced at $1 each way as are the regular Thursday shopping trips.
Thurston class reunion scheduled
The 40th reunion of the Thurston High School class of 1970 will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Radisson Hotel in Livonia.
The cost for the event is $40 per person and includes a dinner buffet. A cash bar will be available and organizers suggest casual attire. Rooms at the hotel are available at a special rate but must be made directly with the Radisson. To ensure the special rate, callers must identify themselves as members of the Thurston High School class reunion group.
