Eagles host annual fundraiser Saturday
The Van Buren Fraternal Order of Eagles will honor one of their own on Saturday and raise money for a good cause at the same time.
The Eagles will host a ‘That’s Amore V Cancer Fundraiser’ in memory of Richard Farkas beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Van Buren Aerie, located at 9961 Beck Road in Belleville.
“Every year our aerie and auxiliary join together in support of cancer research to honor Richard and all of the other members, family and friends we have lost to cancer,” said Linda Combs, director of the Van Buren Township Senior Center and a member of the Van Buren Eagles.
Tickets for the fundraiser are $25 per person and include dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks. A cash bar will be available for other beverages. “Carino’s Italian Grille” is donating the food for the event. The beer, wine and soft drinks will be provided by the Van Buren Aerie. Guests may participate in live and silent auctions and will enjoy live entertainment, too. The proceeds will benefit the CS Motts Children’s Hospital for Pediatric Cancer Research, according to Combs.
The Van Buren Eagles have hosted cancer fundraisers since 1974. Richard Farkas, a F.O.E. member, was instrumental in these fundraisers since 1994. Farkas was diagnosed with the disease and lost his battle with leukemia in 2002.
Last year the event raised more than $14,000 for the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Michigan Hospital for pancreatic and ovarian cancer research. Since 1994 the event has raised more than $150,000 to support cancer research, Combs said.
The group has existed since 1981 and has had more than 700 members from the community. In addition to the funds they’ve generated for cancer related charities, they contribute about $15,000 annually to local and national organizations and have raise another $4,000 for organizations like The National Guard, as well as local D.A.R.E. programs and youth athletic teams.
To make a donation or get information about the group or to attend the fundraiser, call the Eagles at (734) 699-8836
“This year we want to raise more funds then ever before to support the children in their time of need,” said Combs.
