Anna Smith

Anna Smith is going to be busy this week.
Despite the efforts of friends and family to lure the 13-year-old from her Belleville home, she’ll be pretty busy practicing interview questions and choosing her wardrobe for her first-ever pageant appearance.

Smith is the daughter of Richard and Ginger Smith and is a student at South Middle School. She submitted an application for the Miss Pre-Teen Detroit Title and was surprised when she was selected for an interview with the pageant coordinator last week.

It must have gone well, she agreed, because she learned last weekend that she has been chosen to compete for a share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be distributed to contestants. Smith will be in the pre-teen division, one of four categories based on age.

She will compete in modeling routines, which will include both casual and formal wear, and the somewhat terrifying interview with the judging panel. According to a pageant press release, these interviews are the most important aspect of the competition and allow contestants to display their personality. “Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of the competition,” organizers said.

The winner will be crowned Miss Pre-Teen Detroit and will represent Detroit and the surrounding communities in a national competition in Orlando, FLA. Where more than $60,000 in prizes and awards will be presented.

There is no cost to Smith or her family to participate in the area competition, although she is looking for sponsors as community businesses, organizations and private individuals who will help sponsor her financially.

Anyone interested in sponsoring or helping to sponsor Smith can contact the Detroit pageant coordinator at 1-800-569-2487.
