William CreameanBelleville officials will have to swiftly appoint a new member to the city council. William Creamean, a council man for 8 years, stepped down on Wednesday.
Creamean told his colleagues at the city council meeting that he will be moving to Dallas, TX the next day. The city will host a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. on July 10 to discuss the appointment, according to Mayor ProTem Bill Emerson.
“We’re not sure how the council is going to go,” he said. “We thank him for his service. He’s been a great help and we’ll miss him very much.”
The City of Belleville has 30 days to appoint someone to fill the position. The person appointed will serve on the council until the November 2007 election.
Creamean, a resident for more than 10 years, began his work in the city in 1998. He said the decision to resign was solely a professional choice.
“It wasn’t a step down due to other reasons. It was completely professional,” said Creamean. “I work for Ford and they decided that my skills would be of better service somewhere else so I’ll be transferred.”
“It’s sad in many respects, but life changes; things are dynamic,” he added. “When I first came here to Belleville, I didn’t know one person, but I came to know and enjoy a lot of people.”
Many said they, too, came to enjoy Creamean and the work he has done for the city.
“They may find someone to fill the seat, but they won’t find someone to take his place,” said Kay Atkins, a former city council member.
“Belleville won’t be the same without you,” resident Rick Dawson told him.
Anyone interested in the position can apply at city hall, as well. For more information, contact the clerk’s office at (734) 697-9323.
