William Creamean resigns from Belleville city council

William Creamean

William Creamean, a Belleville City Council member for more than eight years, stepped down last week.

Creamean told his colleagues at the city council meeting July 5 that he would be moving to Dallas, TX the next day. The City of Belleville has 30 days to appoint someone to fill the position until the November 2007 election.

Creamean, a resident for more than 10 years, began his work in the city in 1998. He said the decision to resign was a professional choice.

“It wasn’t a step down due to other reasons. It was completely professional,” said Creamean. “I work for Ford and they decided that my skills would be of better service somewhere else so I’ll be transferred.”

“It’s sad in many respects, but life changes; things are dynamic,” he added. ”When I first came here, I didn’t know one person, but I came to know and enjoy a lot of people.”

Many people said they came to enjoy Creamean and the work he has done for the city.

“They may find someone to fill the seat, but they won’t find someone to take his place,” said Kay Atkins, a former city council member.

“Belleville won’t be the same without you,” resident Rick Dawson told him.

Throughout his tenure, Creamean said he has helped see numerous projects through including the initiation of the “Wheels for Independence” program, the Farmer’s Market, as well as the purchase of new vehicles for the fire department and regular vehicle replacements for the police department. He also worked to clean-up Hillside Cemetery, the new department of public works yard and three additional parks. A major project, he said, was securing a $1 million grant from Wayne County to enhance Horizon Park.

“I’ve seen a lot of change, mostly for the good,” Creamean said.

However, there are improvements he would like to see, too.

“I am discouraged by the lack of receiving regular and charter defined financial reports,” Creamean said.

Projects he would like to see the city work toward are the establishment of a Belleville senior citizen center and a new fire hall. The enhancement of a more viable downtown area, building walking and bike paths and the completion of the Horizon Park project are needed, too, Creamean said.

“I would love to see them finish of Horizon Park in all its glory. I went to County Commissioner John Sullivan to get that money and I’m afraid it’s going to be washed down the river and that’s unfortunate,” he said. “Belleville needs to work more with the community.”

Creamean said he wishes the council well in future endeavors.

“It’s been extremely difficult at times to have made decisions without them. I encourage the city’s elected and appointed officials to work more closely together with the other facing members of the community,” he said. “The future strength and viability of the community lies in these associations. To do otherwise would be both costly and time consuming for everyone.

“I’d like to thank the citizens who voted and supported me. Many of whom met me on the street and contacted me when they felt they needed to be heard,” Creamean added.

Anyone interested in the position can apply at city hall. For more information, contact the clerk’s office at (734) 697-9323.
