Township narrows down fire chief search
Officials continue the search for a new fire chief in Van Buren Township, hoping to fill the position by September.
Jerry Champagne, director of public safety for the township, said the interview process is in the second phase.
The township typically goes through several phases during the hiring process, he said, including advertising, initial screening of resumes and interviews.
The hope is to have a recommendation to the board of trustees in August, according to Township Supervisor Cindy King.
“It’s good timing then because it’s before the winter season and the director can spend time acclimating that person before 2007, which will be a busy year,” she said.
The township has been without a fire chief since February. Al Smolen, former fire chief and deputy director of public safety, resigned after more than 14 years with Van Buren Township. He said he wanted to pursue new opportunities in teaching.
Requirements for the position include a bachelor’s degree or equivalent training, as well as education in fire safety and management.
The salary is $68,000-$71,000, but will be negotiable depending on qualifications and experience, officials said.
