Belleville children’s triathalon proves popular
The 10th annual Summer Kid’s Triathlon at Belleville High School saw more than 80 participants from Belleville, Van Buren Township and Sumpter Township.
Parents, fans, community volunteers and sponsor the City of Belleville Parks and Recreation Commission showed their support as the children competed in the shot put, long jump and run divisions. Each division—ages 3-4, 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-18—competed to receive an award.
Stephanie Rix, event coordinator and member of the parks and recreation commission, said that word-of mouth made the event so successful.
“This was my first year on the commission and seeing the participants have so much fun, that’s what it’s all about,” she said. “We almost doubled in number this year. There are kids who just really love it.”
Jim Power, member of the parks and recreation commission, said it was a cooperative effort for the 10th anniversary.
“We had a great turnout, a lot of volunteers and parents,” he said. “It was exceptionally well received, which made it all worthwhile.”“We had a lot of kids who had a ball, and to be honest, I think the adults had more fun than the kids did,” he added.
Multiple events winners included: Blake Morgan, Tim Senne, Leslie Holbrook, Travis Adkins, Michael Morris, Mychael Bradley, Cooper West, Ryan Wehr, Jaiden Robbins, Bella O’Sullivan and Jamal Gray.Other winners included: Sean Driscoll, Tyler Robbins, Mariah Morgan, Akerion Cotton, Scott Fleming, Lindsy Eagle, Noah Howell, Zack Bongiorno, AJ Santauy, Jay Robbins, Alan Stoelton, Shiane Williams, Andy Barber, Matthew Bradley, Chase Bongiorno, Antonio Finney, Isaac Morris and Anthony Floro.
Each contestant received a participation button and ribbon along with ice cream provided by Cool Cone in Belleville. First through third place winners received a medal.
“It’s a great community event for the kids to enjoy and it’s one that the parks and recreation commission has done and will continue to do,” said Rix.
