Lianne Clair, her husband, David Parrott, and her parents, Jerilyn and Lee Clair, look over the precinct totals at a campaign celebration party on Tuesday night. Clair was appointed in April as township trustee. She will serve until noon on Nov. 20.The Van Buren Public School District will see a renewal of the non-homestead school millage, while voters in the Belleville area chose Lianne Clair for trustee in Van Buren Township.
The polls officially closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday for the primary election. The unofficial total of votes was 700 votes for Clair and 480 votes for Larry Fix.
Clair said she was elated that voters are allowing her to continue work at this point.
“I hope to work even harder,” she said, as tears came down her face. “I can’t thank everyone enough for the love and support they’ve given me.”
“I look forward to a little respite,” she added. “Now, I know where I need to work in the community so that’s where I’ll focus for the November election.”
Cindy King, Van Buren Township supervisor, said she was pleased that the voters supported Clair.
“I hope they’ll vote in November,” she said. “I don’t think a lot of people really understand the factors and services that goes into the position but Lianne really gets that.”
Many, however, were disappointed by voter turnout.
“Voter turnout was pretty dismal,” said Clair. “It would be nice if more people came out because we have an opportunity to participate in governance, but some chose to ignore it.”
“You want to prepare for every election as if every single voter will come out, but the turnout this time was sad,” said King.
Unofficial results showed the school millage was approved, too. It will be renewed for another five years from 2007-2011 and will allow the school district to continue to levy up to 18 mills on all property except principle residence and qualified agricultural property.
Residents also voted chose two candidates to move ahead for the 11th District Wayne County Commission seat-Canton Township residents Loren Bennett and Kevin McNamara.
