Field of 18 file for township election
The ‘King Team’ will not go uncontested in the race for the Van Buren Township Board of Trustees.
As of the 4 p.m. filing deadline on Tuesday, 18 candidates filed for the board including: Cindy King, Paul White, Ann Frances and Larry Fix for supervisor; Joannie Payne, Felicia Paris-Brooks and Leon Wright for clerk; Sharry Budd for treasurer and Phil Hart, Jeffery Jahr, Walter Rochowiak, Lianne Clair, John Herman, Kenneth Landstrom, Denise Partridge, Albert Ostrowski, Judy Johnson and Sylvia Shippy for trustee.
Jahr, who first sought election in 2000 for trustee, said he decided to seek a third term because he wants to continue to serve the community where he grew up and raised his family. Future goals, if elected, include managing growth, public safety and recreation and open space, he said.
“Growth is inevitable and we need to be able to control it to a degree, but we don’t want to see it grow too fast,” Jahr said.
Rochowiak, who if elected will serve his sixth term in office, said he believes his years of experience on the township board can still be of good for the community.
“I’ve served honestly and would like to continue to represent the people for who they are,” he said. “I hope people realize that and allow my to serve another four years.”
Clair, who was elected in November 2006 to fill an un-expired term, said it’s been an honor and privilege to serve as a trustee.
“In my array of employment and volunteer experiences, I have found that I truly enjoy working for the public sector,” she said. “I’ve worked hard during my term in office and have been richly rewarded by the knowledge that I’m directly contributing to the success, health and welfare of my community.”
The deadline to file for a non-partisan petition is 4 p.m. on July 17, which will go straight to the Nov. 4 election. The primary election will take place on Aug. 5. For more information, contact the township clerk’s office at (734) 699-8909.
