Belleville approves 2008-2009 budget
Belleville officials approved the 2008-2009 city budget recently.
The general fund budget was approved at $2.4 million, which includes a property tax levy of 16.6 mills for general operating purposes, according to Clerk/Treasurer Diana Kollmeyer, who is also acting city manager.
In addition, a 2008 city property tax levy of 1.30 mills—the same as 2007—was approved for the 10-year capital outlay plan for equipment for the fire, police and the public services departments.
Mayor Pro Tem Rick Dawson said, “The budget process went well, not ideal, but under the economic circumstances it didn’t leave the council with many choices.
“It’s not an option to put more money aside, but services will continue and we’ll continue to move ahead,” he said.
The 2008-2009 budget includes appropriations for: the general fund, $190,997; major street fund, $129,302; local street fund, $99,595; cemetery fund, $171,267; sanitation fund, $3,500; perpetual care fund, $45,280; building fund, $500; budget stabilization, $12,900; drug law enforcement fund, $815,730; public improvement fund, $1.1 million; downtown development authority fund, $205,000; development authority 1994 debt fund and $97,066 for the development authority 2000 debt fund.
“As for the millage rate, that’s the way it works so we’ll go with it and deal with it,” said Dawson. “We’ll work within the parameters that are allotted.”
