Van Buren man killed at home
A Van Buren Township man was shot and killed recently as he answered his apartment door.
Township police continue to investigate the fatal shooting of Dwight Darnell Bryant, 40, which happened at the Hidden Cove Apartment complex last Saturday.
The incident took place about 12:10 a.m., where upon arrival, officers found a male who was later identified as Bryant lying inside his apartment, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, officials said.
Police also found casings at the scene that are consistent with those used in an assault rifle.
According to family members, Bryant was shot and killed after he answered his second floor apartment door. They also told police that they jumped out the two-story window after the shooting started so they didn’t see who the suspect was, according to Capt. Greg Laurain of the Van Buren Township Police Department.
“They did though speculate that the shooter was a 19-year-old Van Buren Township man who made threats against members of their family after a fight ensued at the apartment pool earlier that day,” Laurain said.
Bryant was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor were he was pronounced dead.
Investigators did not reveal the names of the two 19-year-olds who were taken into custody 10 hours after the shooting for questioning. They did say, though, they were present at the pool that evening.
Revenge appears to be the motive, Laurain said, which stemmed over a fight at the pool where the suspect and friends had been assaulted earlier that day. Police said it’s unclear at this point if Bryant was even present at the fight or if he was a ‘victim of circumstance’ and not the intended target.
No one has been charged, yet and the investigation is ongoing. It will be submitted upon completion to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office for charges, officials said.
Individuals with information about Bryant’s death are urged to contact the Van Buren Township Police Department at (734) 699-8930.
