Residents showcase area lake gardens
Five area homeowners will soon showcase their green thumbs during the Belleville Area Garden Walk: Gardens on the Lake.
The event, sponsored by the Fred C. Fischer Library and other area businesses, will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 27. It will feature five home gardens on Belleville Lake, which all have a different feel, according to Debra Green, director of the library.
“Some are more of a cottage garden feel, some are poolside, but all have an amazing view of the lake,” she said.
“Everybody is not a water nut like I am, but they’re beautiful homes,” said Faye Traskos, volunteer for the event. “Every gardener longs to have water in their garden so what else is better than having a lake.”
Participants may visit the gardens in any order and homeowners will be at each site to talk about their gardens, however, participants must go to the library first to obtain the map and addresses of the gardens.
Each garden is unique, organizers said. One is a nostalgic farmhouse flower garden, another is a contemporary garden, and there is a more formal garden, a leafy-shaded dwelling and a cozy cottage type garden.
“All (gardens) have their own pleasures and all are different from last year’s walk,” said Green.
“There’s also a possibility of a bonus garden, too,” said Traskos.
The Garden Market will also return this year at the library grounds where about 10 vendors will sell a variety of merchandise including bird baths and feeders, floral art, pottery and plants.
Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 the day of the walk. They can be purchased at Antiques on Main, the Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce, Garden Fantasy and the library. All proceeds go toward the library, as well. For more information, call the library at (734) 699-3291.
“It’s a great way to learn and take back ideas to your own garden,” said Traskos. “The public can feel free to ask questions and educate themselves.”
