Schools look for interim superintendent
Van Buren Public School Board of Education members have decided to start the search for an interim superintendent.
Board members voted unanimously Monday to have Board President Dave Peer talk to potential candidates to see if they’re interested in the post, according to Paul Henning, spokesperson for the district.
“School board members felt they should have something in place in case something happens,” he said.
Potential candidates include Larry Tabor, a former superintendent for the school district, along with Louise Williamson, a former personnel director for Van Buren Schools.
“Another possibility is using an organization that provides substitute superintendents; they’re retired now, but use to be in the field,” said Henning.
Superintendent Pete Lazaroff was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia last July and has been out of the office since.
“Everybody has been pulling together to make sure the day-to-day operations have been met,” said Henning. “We’re looking forward to his healthy return to the district. Everyone is taking on more responsibility and making sure the school season starts on a good foot.”
Officials also approved to change the regular board of education meetings and work-study sessions back to their original day and times. Regular meetings will take place at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday and work-study sessions will take place on the third Monday of the month from September through December.
A special board meeting will also take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 6 at the administration building. Officials will discuss happenings in the district, as recommend by the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) facilitator. The meeting is open to the public.
