Upcoming library programs announced
The Fred C. Fischer Library will host several upcoming programs for the entire family.

The University of Michigan Science and Reading program will take place Jan. 17, Feb. 21 and March 21 at the library. The family—and children ages 6-11-years-old—can enjoy a reading program with hands on experiments.

On Jan. 17, families can discover how to read star maps, explore constellations and make a sundial. On Feb. 21, participants can learn about planets and the solar system and on March 21, they will explore space, launch a rocket and more. Registration is required for all programs.

Family story time will take place at 6:30 p.m. from now until Feb. 9 on Mondays. The preschool pals program will take place at 11 a.m. from now until Feb. 10 on Tuesdays. The terrific toddlers program will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays from now until Feb. 11.

A teen program will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 when the New Year will be celebrated along with World Peace Day. Teens should bring favorite CDs, friends and ideas, organizers said.

For more information about any of the programs call the library at (734) 699-3291.

Red Kettle continues throughout January
There is still time to make a contribution for those in need in the community.

The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign is in urgent need of assistance to reach the anticipated fundraising goal of $8.5 million. They are currently more than $839,000 less than donations last year.

There has been a 20 percent increase in the need for services from the Salvation Army over past years from all economic levels, within the city and in the suburbs. Detroit has been ranked one of the nation’s poorest cities and is facing tough economic times. More than 40 percent of residents, or one in five children, live in poverty in the state, according to the organization.

Contributing factors are the declining economy and the subsequent unemployment rate in the area. The Salvation Army has had a particularly difficult year due to the fact that many who contributed to the campaign in past years find themselves in need of services this year.

The campaign continues until Jan. 31. Contributions can be made by calling (877) SAL-MICH or online at www.salmich.org.
