Man dies in accident
A man died after being struck by a car while crossing Michigan Avenue on a bike Tuesday evening.
Gjeto Kaceli, 69, died at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Ypsilanti from injuries sustained in the incident. He was a retired teacher from Albania who was living with family in Canton.
A 29-year-old Ypsilanti man was driving his Honda Civic eastbound at 6:30 p.m. on Michigan near Beck Road when he hit Kaceli, who was bicycling diagonally across the lanes.
The driver, a 29-year-old Ypsilanti man, told police he didn’t see the victim “until the last minute,” according to Sgt. Rick Pomorski.
“He tried to apply the brakes and swerved,” he said. The driver stopped at the scene and was not injured.
Police say Kaceli leaves behind a wife and at least two sons. Family members told investigators that the victim had been known to take walks and ride his bike in the area.
There was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident. Police continue to investigate the accident and will make a report to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
