Wal-Mart looks at Costco site
Representatives from Wal-Mart were interested enough in a Canton Township site recently given up by Costco Wholesale to meet with township planning officials for an informal “pre-application” meeting on Friday.
Costco representatives informed township officials that the business would not build a new store on a site at the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Belleville Road. The news garnered much interest from other retailers.
Wal-Mart, which has a location in Canton on Ford Road, is “very interested” in the Michigan Avenue property, said Supervisor Tom Yack. Much of that is because Costco dropped the plans so late in the planning game.
“(Wal-Mart) can move pretty quickly, because what they would choose to do is take the existing (Planned Development District) agreement with Costco and work with us so that we’re pleased and happy,” said Yack. “Costco had done most of the work.”
If Wal-Mart moves forward it would likely build one of its “Supercenter” stores, added Yack.
While interest in the site is good, Yack said if Wal-Mart proceeds with any plans for the corner, there could be many surprised shoppers.
“I’ve got to tell you, there’s going to be disappointed people, because they (expected) something that wasn’t in the marketplace,” said Yack.
The closest Costco is in Livonia.
