Blooming success

Garden Walk succeeds despite heat

Sweltering heat couldn’t keep garden enthusiasts away from the eighth Annual Canton Garden Walk on Sunday.

“It was a very, very, very hot day,” said Susan Klimek, chairperson of the event, “but we ended up with five absolutely beautiful gardens.”

For the first time this year, the Canton Garden Club, which sponsors the event, also hosted a gardener’s market with a dozen vendors at the Canton Historical Museum.

“The market, being the first year that we’ve done it, was a big success,” said Klimek.

Traditionally, the walk, which offers up a half-dozen private gardens for a leisurely walk-through, takes place during the final weekend of June.

For 2006, organizers had pushed it into July because spring had been starting later.

“Well, this year, the spring started two weeks earlier,” said Klimek. As a result, the gardeners had to put in overtime making sure their yards looked good past their peaks—and in the 96-degree heat.

Such is the life of a gardener, said Klimek.

“It’s fun,” she said with a laugh. “When you’re playing with nature you don’t have much choice.”

The Canton Garden Club is now planning the 2007 garden walk. Anyone interested in learning more about the club or next year’s event can call (734) 722-5901.
