Police probe weekend wreck
Police aren’t yet sure if speed was a factor in a rollover accident that seriously injured a Canton Township resident on Saturday.
The 29-year-old man was driving north on Beck Road south of Geddes Road at 10:30 a.m. when he tried to pass another car, according to police reports.
“He tried to pass, realized he couldn’t and swerved back into his lane,” said Sgt. Rick Pomorski of Canton Police. “He overshot his lane and went off the road, where it was gravel.”
The car struck a culvert and became airborne, flipping two or three times, said Pomorski. Witnesses said the man was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the road.
He had broken bones and cuts, but the injuries were not life-threatening. The driver was taken to St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Ypsilanti.
“He’s going to be OK,” said Pomorski.
The police accident investigation team didn’t find any indication of drugs or alcohol being a factor in the incident. The case is still under investigation, though.
No other cars were struck and there were no other injuries reported. The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
On Tuesday, Pomorski said the information was still preliminary. Data concerning speed and other factors were still pending when The Canton Eagle went to press.
