Candidates crowd Canton ballot

It’s going to be a busy election season in Canton Township this year.

When the filing deadline for township offices came and went on Tuesday, 12 candidates had returned petitions to seek a number of township offices.

Of the current board, only Incumbent Clerk Terry Bennett is unopposed.

Seeking the four open township trustees are: Michael Andro, John Anthony, Fred Bolden, Todd Caccamo, Syed Taj, Jaldhar Prasad, Patrick Williams and Karl Zarbo. All filed as Republicans with the exception of Taj. Zarbo and Caccamo are the only incumbents.
Township Trustee Melissa McLaughlin and Joan Noricks, president of the Canton Community Foundation have each filed for the office of treasurer. Incumbent Elaine Kirchgatter will not seek reelection.

State Rep. Phil LaJoy (R-Canton), who is term-limited out of office, will seek the supervisor seat being vacated by Tom Yack. He’ll be opposed by David Marsh. Marsh filed as a Democrat.

Todd LaJoy, Phil’s son and a current trustee, will seek the seat vacated by his father. He is opposed by Dian Slavens, wife of former school board member and current judge Mark Slavens.

There are also eight residents seeking six seats on the Canton Library Board, which is a non-partisan race. They are: Ayesha Taj, George Snow, Alfredo Cordero, James Gillig, Colleen Van Auken, James Fausone, Donald Turner and Michael Siegrist.

County Commissioner Kevin McNamara faces opposition in Canton resident Steven Johnson (see related story) and State Rep. Marc Corriveau, whose 20th district includes a strip of Canton, faces three challengers in Plymouth residents Jerry Vorva, Abe Munfakh and Joe Van Esley.

Profiles of candidates will appear prior to the Aug. 5 election.
