Inkster residents spread warmth
Things will warm up next week at the Inkster Fire Department when coats, gloves, and boots will be distributed at no cost to local families.
The coat giveaway will take place from 3-5 p.m. Dec. at the fire department. The event is organized by Inkster Weed and Seed and in cooperation with the schools. Currently, donations of new and gently used youth and adult sized coats, gloves, hats, boots and scarves are being accepted at Inkster City Hall, the Booker T. Dozier Recreation Complex and the Fire Department.
“Things are a little slow this year,” confided Jeannine Fields, housing and economic development manager for the city. “We don’t actually put a number on the families we’ve helped, but there have been a lot of them. We work with the schools, and I think last year we had 60 or 70 coats. I’m hoping lots of people will donate at the last minute,” she said.
Fields said this is the second year the coat giveaway has been an event with refreshments, open to the public.
“I think we had maybe 10 or 12 families last year,” she said. “It was really nice because the fire department gave us some smoke detectors to give to them and we had received a donation of turkeys which we were able to give to the families,” she added.
Cash donations are always welcome, she added and checks can
be made out and sent to: Inkster Weed and Seed, 26215 Trowbridge, Inkster, 48141.
The fire department is located at 27717 Michigan Ave. and the recreation complex is at 2025 Middlebelt, and both will accept donations of cold weather wear.
“We’d like to have the donations by Dec. 11,” Fields said.
