City of Inkster begins sidewalk repair effort
Those unsightly and often dangerous sidewalks with cracks, bumps and pools of water are being targeted by the Inkster Building Department, with a little help from Washington, D.C.
This week, Jeannie Fields at the Inkster Planning, Building and Economic Development Department said that the city will use funding from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funded Community Development Block Grant Program to help residents with sidewalk repairs.
“Grant funding is limited and will be disbursed on a first come—first served basis,” she said.
Assistance of up to $1,000 for sidewalk repairs including replacement, if necessary, to secure pedestrian safety throughout the city is the goal and the stated purpose of the program, Fields added.
Efforts will focus on replacement of concrete that poses a threat to public safety, such as poor concrete alignment, disintegrated surfaces or holding water, Fields said.
She stressed that an application is required to determine residents’ eligibility for the grant funds and that the emphasis would be placed on the areas of greatest need.
For more information about the program, eligibility requirements or an application, Fields suggested visiting the city website at www.cityofinkster.com or contact the planning, building and economic development department at (313) 563-7709.
