Free backpacks available
A limited number of backpacks with school supplies will be available to local children from the Wayne/Westland Salvation Army.
To be eligible, children must live in the Wayne, Westland, Inkster, Romulus or New Boston area.

Comerica Park trip planned
Inkster seniors are traveling to Comerica Park for a Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Indians on Sept. 3.
The cost is $30 and includes transportation, game ticket and a food voucher.
Payment is due at Inkster Senior Services by Aug. 3.

Police volunteers sought
Senior volunteers are needed at the Inkster Police Auxiliary.
Volunteers who can dedicate 4-6 hours Monday through Friday to answer phones and do some light clerical work are needed at the offices at 710 Middlebelt Road.

Court provides help for seniors
Help for senior citizens with grass cutting and yard clean up is available through Judge Sylvia James and the 22nd District Court.

Enhanced Fitness Classes offered
Enhanced Fitness classes take place from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Dozier Recreation Complex.
Seniors are urged to join the classes, sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.

Senior Olympics athletes sought
Inkster residents can pick up the Western Wayne County Senior Olympics registration package at city hall, the Dozier Recreation Center or the Senior Services office at Twin Towers.
The event is scheduled for Aug. 17-21 this year and will include numerous categories and competitions. Opening Day festivities include the opening ceremony, breakfast with Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano. The week-long games close with a luncheon and awards ceremony at Schoolcraft College Vista-Tech Center.

Tennis lessons offered
Tennis lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced players will be available at the Booker Dozier Recreation Complex in a seven-week program which began July 6.
Lessons for senior citizens are free.
Racquets and balls will be provided and all players will be evaluated and placed in groups with others of similar abilities.

Seniors picnic planned
The Inkster Commission on Aging will host the annual picnic for seniors with music from the 50s and 60s from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Aug. 28 at Wheatley Park.
There will be food, games and prized for the best 50s outfits.

City birthday party set
Inkster will mark 45 years as a city with a celebration at the Dozier Recreation Complex.
The party will take place from 3 until 7 p.m. Aug. 30 and include family fun, games, food and the sharing of memories. All proceeds will benefit the senior center building fund.
Inkster was established in 1923 and incorporated in 1964.

Senator hosts talk hours
State Sen. Tupac Hunter will once again host coffee hours for residents who would like to learn more about what’s happening in Lansing.
Residents are invited to attend whichever 10-11 a.m. coffee hours work best for their schedules.
A Detroit coffee hour: will take place every first Friday at Mary’s Grill, 20804 Plymouth Road. A Dearborn Heights coffee hour will take place every third Friday at McDonald’s, 6412 North Telegraph Road. An Inkster coffee hour will take place every second Friday at McDonald’s, 27125 Cherry Hill Road.
