Chamber gears up for Northville summer carnival
The corner of Seven Mile Road and Center Street will be a popular place again this weekend.
This time, though, it won’t be a line up of parade participants or the Farmer’s Market that occupies the busy corner—it will be the return of the Northville Summer Carnival.
“Apparently they had one of these back in the day—but I can’t define ‘day’,” said Jody Humphries, president of the Northville Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is one of two organizations sponsoring the carnival. “I’m not sure why it went away.”
When the chamber looked for another event to host in the community, they first thought about combining the carnival with the upcoming OctoberFest, which will take place in Northville Township in October. A quick conversation with most carnival vendors, though, showed that that wouldn’t be possible.
“They all head out of state in September,” Humphries said.
Serendipity helped bring the festival back. The company had been scheduled to set up a carnival in another community, but that fell through, leaving the coming weekend open for Northville.
Humphries said the chamber jumped on the chance, once they got permission from their main co-sponsor—the owners of Northville Downs, where the carnival will be located.
The event begins today and continues until Sunday with varying hours. It will be open from 1-10 p.m. today, noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. It will feature a wide assortment of rides as well as games and carnival-type food vendors. Admission is free, rides are $1 and all-day wristbands will be available for $18.
Humphries said that, for now, the rides and games are the only entertainment.
“If things go well this year and we have a lot of people telling us they really enjoy it, we may look at adding an entertainment component next year,” she said.
