The race for the 20th District State Representative is shaping up.
To win a second term in the House, Incumbent Marc Corriveau (D-Northville) will have to stave off a strong Plymouth contingent.

Former Township Trustee Abe Munfakh, former State Representative Jerry Vorva and prominent Realtor Joe Van Esley have all filed petitions seeking the seat. Munfakh, however, has also filed for the position of Plymouth Township Supervisor and has to withdraw from one of the contests.

The 20th District includes most of Northville, Plymouth, Plymouth Township and Wayne. Munfakh, who could not be reached for comment by publication deadline, has until Friday to decide which race to pursue.

Corriveau, who is completing his first term in office, said he hopes to continue to work for an improved and diversified economy in the state.

“We’ve worked hard since the day I was elected and we’ll continue to fight hard for the district,” Corriveau said.

“It’s not a secret how the economy has been going in Michigan. My focus has been and will continue to be to bring more jobs to the state of Michigan. We’re going to have to diversify our industry, into things like film and energy. We need to bridge our 20th century economy to the 21st century economy.”

Corriveau recently dodged controversy surrounding a speculated recall attempt spearheaded by former State Representative Leon Drolet, chair of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance. Corriveau and House Speaker Andy Dillon were targeted for their support of a state service tax increase.

Corriveau said that whether or not the recall was an earnest attempt is still a matter of speculation, but said that he was glad to put the issue behind him.

“I felt that there was a lot of pressure, most of it out-of-state pressure, to hijack our political process,” Corriveau said. “I’m glad to put it behind me. I always felt as if the people in my district understood that I had to do what I felt was in the best interest of the district. Not everyone will agree with me, but as long as I’m doing my part, I will earn their support.”
