Low turnout decides township trustee race

There will be a new face on the Northville Township Board this year.

Incumbent Brad Werner did not advance past the August primary election on Tuesday.

“It was about time for me to take a vacation, anyway,” said Werner when told the news.

Chris Roosen was the top vote-getter again with 1,403 votes. Next came Mindy Herrmann with 1,362, followed by Marjorie Banner with 1,279 and Marv Gans, who also had 1,279. Jon Sabo earned 1,178 votes.

Carol Poenisch, the sole Democratic candidate, will automatically win a spot on the November ballot, joined by the four top Republican candidates.

Seeking a third term of office, Banner, a professional legal writer, said that she was honored to be selected, but was even happier to hear that Livonia residents had decided to vote against annexation.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Banner said.

Gans, who has served as a township trustee since 1996, is the former chair of several township committees including the Brownfield Authority and Planning Commission. Gans is a former college administrator who has been an outspoken opponent of annexation efforts.

Roosen is seeking his second term as a township trustee. Roosen is the sales account manager for Visteon Corp., and has been an outspoken opponent of annexation efforts.

Herrmann, a Lt. Colonel in the United States Marine Corps. Reserve, is the current Department of Michigan Marine Corps League Chairman. This is her first bid for office as township trustee.

Unofficial results showed that 8,223 total votes were cast, which is about 27.5 percent of the registered voters.
