Debate set for 20th House candidate

A non-partisan citizen think tank has secured commitments from 20th District State Rep. Marc Corriveau (D-Northville) along with his challenger and former state representative Jerry Vorva (R-Plymouth) to participate in a town hall forum next month.

The public event scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Oct.8 at the Plymouth District Library is part of the Michigan Defining Moment (MDM) Public Engagement Campaign, a grouping of meetings consisting of several debates and town hall forums sponsored by the non-profit Center for Michigan in an effort to bring residents and candidates across the political spectrum together to discuss “common-ground” issues that have emerged from 180 community conversations with more than 1,800 residents across the state.

During the forum Corriveau and Vorva will be asked questions through a moderator about how to make Michigan and its economy globally competitive and diverse as well as maintaining an effective, efficient and accountable government.

“Through local forums like this one, we’re seeking to intensify candidates’ focus on the issues voters tell us matter the most for the state’s future,” said John Bebow, the executive director of Center for Michigan. The Corriveau/Vorva Forum is the only MDM-sanctioned event in western Wayne County.

“We encourage residents Northville, Plymouth and Wayne (Michigan 20th House of Representatives District) to take advantage of this opportunity to interact with local political leaders.”

Nancy Short, a spokeswoman for the public engagement campaign said the forum will consists of a moderator asking questions developed during the community conversations. She added that the goal of the organization is to involve more than 10,000 Michiganians in the discussion series 2010.

While questions from the audience during the forum will be prohibited, Short said the community is still able to learn a great deal about the candidates on issues ranging from the economy to government management.

‘This is a great chance to hear from State representatives that will represent the community for the next two years,” said Short.

Admission to the forum is free however those interested in attending must RSVP by emailing nshort@thecenterformichigan.net For more information of the Michigan Defining Moments campaign, visit www.thecenterformichigan.net.
