District earns praise on state report card

Officials and staff members in the Northville Public School District are quick to point out the quality of the education they provide to students.

Once again, they’ve received confirmation of that fact.

The district received a composite ‘A’ grade on the 2005-2006 Education Yes! School Report Card. Northville met Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) standards at all 11 district schools.

“We are pleased that the district has consistently received top marks on these important state and federal assessments,” said Schools Superintendent Leonard Rezmierski.

The district was awarded the ‘A’ grade for the second consecutive year, according to Rezmierski. The district has six elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school and two special education center programs.

This year the program saw some changes, too. It’s the first year that students in the third through eighth grade were assessed in math and English Language Arts under the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), Rezmierski said. It was also the first time the students took the exam in the fall.

It’s also the first year the state has issued report card grades and AYP status for the two special education center programs in the district, which are located at Cooke and Old Village Schools. Those programs serve students from across western Wayne County.

Rezmierski said the news was good, but not necessarily surprising. Northville students consistently score well above MEAP averages.

“It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, teachers and families that even during these challenging economic times for public schools in Michigan, our students continue to excel,” he said.
