Obituaries


BLOCK, Clara Mae, age 89 of Garden City (formerly of East Pointe), died May 5, 2008. Loving wife of the late William. Dear Mother of Kenneth, Ralph (Joan), Clara Craigo and the late William and Robert. Grandmother of 10. Caregiver: Kathy Craigo and many great grandchildren. Visitation and Funeral Services were held at The Harry J. Will Funeral Home in Wayne. Rev Mark Raitz officiated followed by a private burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit.


PAYNE, Hazel Irene (Murrow), age 96 of Lansing MI, passed away May 3, 2008. She was born in Rising Sun, IA on October 10, 1911. She was a member of Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church of Lansing, and was formerly a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wayne, MI. She graduated with a Diploma in Nursing from Cook County General Hospital in Chicago in 1935. She married James G. Payne in 1936 in Des Moines, IA and moved to Detroit and then to Wayne in 1948. Mrs. Payne worked as a Registered Nurse and as a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 60 years. She enjoyed music and playing the piano and cooking. She was very active in the community and the Presbyterian Church in Wayne. She was named “Diamond of the Community” by the City of Wayne. James preceded her in death in 1991, and she moved to Lansing to live with her daughter in 2000. Surviving are: son, James G. (Lorraine) Payne, Jr. of Henderson, NV; daughter, Nancy (Dr. Richard) Halik of Lansing; 5 grandchildren, Eric (Amie) Payne, David Payne, Sarah (Dr. Robert) Halik Donovan, Kelly (Jasen) Halik Veenstra, and Molly (Steven) Halik Motz; many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and 3 sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, 301 W. Jolly Rd, Lansing, with The Rev. Andrew Meyers officiating. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, and she will lie in state at the Church from 1:00 p.m. Saturday until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
