Township actions explained
After reading the Enterprise’s April 24, 2008 editorial entitled “What’s the big secret?” I felt compelled to respond.
First and foremost, the board of trustees and I take very seriously our efforts to ensure the township operates with transparency. This openness can be measured in the financial documents we compile such as monthly expenditure reports and the General Fund Budget. It is evident in the detail provided in the Township’s Capital Improvements Plan and the amount of documentation found in every board agenda packet, copies of which are supplied to all four newspapers covering township events and operations.
I can assure the Enterprise and the residents of Van Buren Township that thoughtful deliberation is given to each matter that comes before the board whether it is approving a purchase, adopting an ordinance or entering into a contract; and always with a sharp eye on the public’s interest and trust.
When it comes to personnel matters, sometimes a different approach must be considered. Under those circumstances, the careers and livelihoods of township employees may be impacted and a level of sensitivity and privacy must be observed. Even the Michigan Open Meetings Act provides an exception to the requirements of a public meeting when a public body is addressing certain employee matters. We will be vigilant in keeping the public informed as to the services we provide and how we utilize funds entrusted to us by the taxpayers and public.
At the same time, we will take measured steps to ensure the privacy of our employees is rightfully respected.
Soon, Public Safety Director Jerry Champagne and I will be presenting to the board our proposal to fill the vacant Fire Chief’s position. That proposal will include how we will seek candidates interested in the position, a comprehensive job description and proposed salary range and the method by which the successful candidate will be determined to lead the Van Buren Fire Department.
Cindy C. King,
Van Buren Township Supervisor
