Changes pull teeth of vicious dog ordinance
Last week, Westland City Council members opted to approve an ordinance relaxing the standards for dogs in the city.
Now, no breed is specifically considered vicious or dangerous, despite the number of attacks and court cases currently on report in the city.
As Police Chief James Ridenour noted, while other cities are becoming more strict in controls placed on these animals, Westland is relaxing the ordinances.
We admit to having some prejudices in the matter, dog lovers though we are.
Some of these animals are just plain scary and the reports of their abilities to jump fences and proclivity to attack children and other animals isn’t just folklore.
While we appreciate the council’s intent to do the right thing and not single out a specific breed, we suspect that this may cause more problems for the animal control officers and the police in the future.
We don’t have a crystal ball and don’t pretend to know the future, but the past performance of these breeds should be a strong warning.
