Township to test temporary water main

Plymouth officials will know Saturday if the temporary water lines now in place will allow construction on the Sheldon Road Underpass to continue.

The Plymouth Township Department of Public Works (DPW) will test the temporary water service connections installed as part of the underpass project.

The temporary connections will provide service for City of Plymouth residents during the removal and replacement of the 36-inch Detroit Water and Sewerage water main along Sheldon Road and M-14.

The five-day test of the system will determine if the temporary lines can provide adequate water service to Plymouth homes and businesses.

While the underpass construction project has caused headaches for many travelers and businesses along the tracks, DPW officials expect no issues with water quality.

“There should be no major changes whatsoever to the water,” said James D. Anulewicz, director of public works for Plymouth Township.

Public works staff will pay particular attention to the first several hours of the test to determine any abnormalities. Anulewicz said several consultants and repair crews would be on call throughout the testing period.

“We anticipate no problems with the test, but we’ll be prepared if there are,” he said.

Wayne County Assistant Executive Alan Helmkamp had expressed concerns about the impact of several recent water main breaks in the city.

“I just didn’t know if the breaks in the area would be a problem. I’m glad that it’s not,” he said.

Anulewicz admitted there is a chance that residents may notice minor changes in water pressure and clarity—but nothing to jeopardize their health.

“People may notice a little cloudiness in their water, but it’s safe to drink,” he said.
