Dominica Convertimo, 14, of Canton, took this photo while in New York for a student exhibit now on display at the Plymouth Community Arts Council.

Before going to New York City in March, Pioneer Middle School student Dominica Convertimo cared very little for photography or the arts.

Now her work is on display along with that of 120 eighth-grade classmates as part of the Behind the Lens exhibit at the Plymouth Community Arts Council.

“I loved it. Going to New York is the best experience I’ve ever had,” said Convertimo, a 14-year old from Canton Township. She was part of a group of youngsters selected to attend an art and drama tour.

The purpose of the trip was to expose students to the cultural lifestyle of the city and have them compare it to the way of life in the Plymouth and Canton communities.

While in the Big Apple, students were asked to take pictures of buildings, people and scenes that were distinctive to the area. They also interviewed many New Yorkers to discuss their beliefs in the American Dream and culture.

“We wanted to engage them in the city, the people and the arts. We wanted to make this more than just a field trip,” said Ben McMurray, the assistant principal at the middle school.

Those lessons helped 14-year old Morgan Randle to look at art and photography differently.

“Before when I used to take pictures, I really didn’t look,” said the Plymouth resident who received an award for her photograph. “I learned to look at things differently,” she said.

The exhibit will continue through Sunday. For more information call 734-416-4278 or visit www.plymoutharts.com.

The Plymouth Community Arts Council is located at 774 N. Sheldon Road in Plymouth Township.
