Five Plymouth businesses make ‘The Best’ list

Five downtown Plymouth businesses have been nominated to participate in a contest to determine the best shops, bars, restaurants, spas and clubs in Metro Detroit.

TranquiliTea Shop, Sean O’Callaghan’s Irish Public House, Boule Artistsan Bakery, Sideways Gift Shop and Spa Julianna are vying for the number one spot on the “4 The Best List.”

The Best List is a contest sponsored by WDIV-TV Channel 4 and clickondetroit.com, a website that profiles businesses throughout the region and allows the public to vote and comment on their favorites.

Colleen Cannon, the owner of TranquiliTea, a tea and accessory shop located on Forest Avenue, said didn’t even know about the contest until she received some literature from the television station in the mail. The tea and accessory shop is competing with seven other teahouses for the title Best Tea House in Detroit.

“I don’t even know who nominated us,” said Cannon, who started her business in Plymouth about 18 months ago. Since learning about the competition, she has asked her customers for support. “We are letting our customers know and telling them to vote for us,” she added.

According to the contest website, nominations are made by customers and then investigated by a research team for accuracy. The research team is also allowed to make nominations.
While the experience of being nominated is new for Cannon and her teashop, Julianne Vanameyde, the owner of Spa Julianna, said it never grows old.

“It’s always wonderful to be nominated and to be a part of businesses in Plymouth being recognized for excellent service,” she said.

Spa Julianna recently won Best Spa/Massage honors from Allure Magazine, a national health and beauty publication, as well as Hour Magazine. She said being able to win an award from WDIV would be an honor to her and her staff.

“I truly have a great staff and it’s nice for them to be recognized,” she added.

Sherrie Pryor, the director of the Plymouth Downtown Development Authority, said the nominations are indicative of the professionalism and dedication of the local business community.

Pryor said the nominations are particularly special because of the type of businesses in the commerce district.

“These are small town businesses who are independent and mostly family-owned,” said Pryor. We are very proud of them,” Pryor said.

Voting for the 2007 4 The Best List will last through Aug. 31. To cast your vote or for a complete list of categories and business, go to www.wdiv.cityvoter.com or www.clickondetroit.com/4thebest.
