Lt. Joseph Tyrone Candie

Plymouth Township police are investigating the murder of a state correctional officer at the Shell gas station located on Beck and Five Mile roads early Wednesday morning.

Lt. Joseph Tyrone Candie, a shift supervisor at the Scott Correctional Facility in Northville Township, was fatally shot several times at about 5 a.m. at the gas station across the street from the prison where he was employed, police said. Witnesses describe overhearing a heated argument between himself and the alleged gunman, said Tom Tiderington, Plymouth Township police chief.

“The victim was seen arguing with a male. He was shot while in the process of filling his car with gasoline,” said Tiderington.

Plymouth community emergency medical personnel pronounced the 39-year old officer from Detroit dead at the scene.

Jodi DeAngelo, an assistant warden at the women’s correctional facility, said Candie had just finished his shift minutes before the shooting occurred. Candie was a 14-year state corrections veteran who spent the last three years assigned to the Scott prison. DeAngelo said Candie was a respected professional who was in good standing with the corrections department.

“We’re devastated when anything happens like this to one of our correctional officers,” she said.

Since the shooting, the prison has increased security measures as a precaution. Police and corrections officials said there is no evidence at this time to indicate that correctional officers at the facility are in danger. Officials would not would divulge whether they believe Candie’s death was related to his job. Candie was not armed during the incident.

Tiderington said township detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance videotapes from the gas station and adjoining businesses in the area for more details.

Witnesses describe the gunman as an African-American male wearing dark clothing and a red bandana. He was seen leaving the gas station driving a 1982-84 light gray or blue Oldsmobile SUV or van with missing hubcaps.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Plymouth Township Police Department at (734) 354-3232 or 911.
