Pastor Larry Mack said he wants to inspire everyone to reach for the goals at Greater Than Dreams Church in Wayne.Pastor Larry Mack said he wants to inspire everyone to live their best possible life.
That’s part of what inspired the name of his church: Greater Than Dreams Church, which recently moved into the City of Wayne.
“We want everyone living a life of their dreams; we want them to go after their dreams,” said Mack, who has been a minister for 18 years. “We want to empower everyone that’s here.”
Mack knows all about living the best possible life. The ministry wasn’t his first choice for the combat medic who at one time was studying to go into the medical field.
“In my heart, I felt like I was going in a good direction, but it wasn’t the right direction for my life,” he said.
Plenty of prayer led him to that decision and seminary school. Soon he was pasturing to young people and at a prison in Defiance, OH. He said it was reaching out to the young people that provided him the courage to take the word of God to the prison.
“They were the biggest challenge,” he said of the youth. “Young people have nothing to lose—they talk back at you. It gave me the courage to go to the next level.”
The church recently moved from the Emagine Theater in Canton to a historic building in downtown Wayne, on Michigan Avenue just west of Wayne Road. The congregation numbers as many as 200, he said. They have been together for about three years, and Mack said he has members drive from as far away as Defiance every week to join in.
Services are contemporary and Mack encourages people to come as they are. The congregation is made up of people of all races, ages and social economic background. There is space for children’s ministry, too.
Mack said he focuses on inspiration with the goal to have everyone turn their goals from intangible dreams to tangible achievements.
“We encourage everyone to be the best in their field,” he said.
“We believe in supporting others,” he added. “I believe if you’re supporting others, you’re supporting their dreams. I consider it to be sowing seeds in someone’s life. Then maybe someone will sow seeds in my life.”
Mack, who is a guest pastor on the Total Christian Television network, said it’s all about getting in tune with one’s purpose in life and relying on faith to go from there. The congregation serves as a support group along the way.
“We ant to be the answer to problems,” said Mack. “We want to assist in any way possible. People need help.”
He said he gets the occasional reminder of that help, too, and it is very rewarding.
“I still have people come up to me—I don’t even recognize all of them—and say: Something you said changed me,” said Mack. “That’s an awesome feeling.”
