Romulus schools put fundraiser in 'Drive'
The Romulus School District is taking the desire to help out the needy and putting it in ‘Drive.’
The district will participate again ‘The Drive,’ a service project to help alleviate poverty, hunger and homelessness. Now in its third year, The Drive was created by The LEAGUE, a national not-for-profit school- and web-based youth service organization, said Kevin Mizzi, AmeriCorps VISTA for The League at Romulus Community Schools.
The Drive runs through Nov. 25–and every student in every school can participate. The students decide what to collect, how to collect the items, and where to distribute them, said Mizzi. They research their community needs to determine what items will be collected and classes score “points” for each item collected. The points are then converted into dollar values – demonstrating their economic impact on the community.
This year, each school in the district is participating for specific organizations in Metropolitan Detroit. A number of elementary schools, including Barth, Cory, Halecreek, Merriman, and Romulus Middle School are having a drive, whether it is food or clothing, which benefits Helping Hands Thrift Store in Romulus. Others will benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank in Taylor, Michigan, Romulus Goodfellows, First Congregational Church of Flat Rock, Orchard Children Services, and Detroit Rescue Mission.
Last year, 36,000 students nationwide, including many of our students here locally, participated in The Drive and across the nation collected $803,341 worth of food and clothing in just 21 days.
“This year, we’re determined to beat that record as the need is greater than ever,” said Mizzi.
