Belleville-Romulus events


Mom to Mom sale announced
The Sumpter Progressive Civic League will sponsor a Mom to Mom clothing sale from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. April 24 and from noon until 5 p.m. April 25.
The event was organized to help bring the community together and save money on children’s clothing, according to a spokesman.
Donations of clothing, now being accepted, will be sold and the proceeds used for the Progressive League. Tables are available for $5 for the weekend.
The event is open to the public.

Students to serve spaghetti
A spaghetti diner fundraiser is planned from 5:30 until 7 p.m. April 29 at North Middle School to help seventh grade students fund the drilling of a water well in a rural African village.
The goal is $3,500 and the suggested donation for the dinner is $3 per person.

Volunteer painters needed
The Sumpter Progressive Civic League members are seeking volunteers to help paint the building at 24101 Sumpter Road in Sumpter Township.
The group also needs volunteers for a work crew and more paint, along with food service donations for a lunch for the workers.
The projects is set for May 8.

Thunder rolls in Belleville
The Brown Funeral Home will sponsor Thunder On Memorial Day, a tribute to honor the memory of veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
Participants can register and line up for the ride starting at 11 a.m. in the Wayne County Community College front parking lot, located off Haggerty Road and I-94.
The group of cyclists will make their way to the Belleville Veteran’s Memorial in Horizon Park, located off Belleville Lake on High Street, arriving at about 2 p.m. There will be a memorial service when all the riders have arrived.
There is a $10 donation fee for riders which will be used to benefit veterans and their families.

Maple syrup tours set
Maybury Farm will offer Maple Syrup tours which include a hayride to the maple tree grove, the tapping of the trees and processing of the sap. Visitors will see how maple syrup is made and take part in the process.
Tours will begin at noon and leave on the hour until 3 p.m. Warm clothes and boots are suggested. The cost for the tour is $5 per person, those 2 and younger are admitted free. The weekend only tours will take place April 10, 11, 17 and 18.
Maybury Farm is located at 50165 Eight Mile Road, about 1 ¼ mile west of Beck Road. Do not enter the state park but continue west and enter at the Maybury Farm sign.

Free grief support, offered one-on-one and in group sessions is available at the Brown Family Center, 678 E. Huron River Dr. in Belleville.

Denim & Diamonds donations sought
The Belleville Chamber of Commerce will host the annual dinner and auction, Denim & Diamonds beginning with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. April 30.
The event will take place at the Woodlands golf Course on Ecorse Road. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. prior to the live and silent auctions.

Spiritual Explosion planned
Marking the 86th anniversary of Universal Hagar’s Spiritual Church, a program titled Spiritual Explosion is planned through April 25.
There will be healing, messages, divine and anointing services beginning at 7:30 nightly, at 10 a.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday.
The event will take place at the Marriott Detroit Metro Airport, 30559 Flynn Dr. in Romulus.

Mother’s Day crafts offered
Children ages 3 through 12 are invited to the Romulus Library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8 to make a Mother’s Day gift.
There is no charge for the event but advance registration is required.

Be the Match event to aid local woman
A bone marrow registry, Be the Match, is planned from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. May 2 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Romulus.
Organizers hope to find a match for Amy Brown, a 30-year-old Leukemia victim who needs a bone marrow transplant to save her life. Brown is a 1997 graduate of Romulus High School.
The church is located at 11280 Ozga Road in Romulus.

Scouts plan health fairs
As part of the Girls Rock program, Girl Scout Troop 20843 will present a Mom and Me Health Fair for middle school-aged girls from grades 6-8 and their mothers.
The event will feature topics like proper skin care techniques, staying safe from the sun, smoking, teen and pee pressure, dating abuse prevention.
Lunch will be provided
The event will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. May 15 at Metro Charter Academy in Romulus.
Admission is free but reservations are required.

Quilting classes offered
Plymouth Westland Grange 389 members offer quilting classes from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Thursday at the Friendship Center on Newburgh Road.
Sharon Strebbing will teach both beginning and advanced quilting.
Cost for the classes is $5 but there is no fee for those doing social quilting.

Fibromyalgia group meets
The Metro Fibromyalgia and CFS support group meets from 1-3 p.m. the second and fourth Thursday of every month at the Merriman Baptist Church, south of Ford Road.
The group sponsors speakers and a lending library. There is no fee to attend although donations are accepted.
