Barth Elementary wins state recognition
Barth Elementary has won yet another award.
The school was named as one of three recipients of the Education Excellence Awards, which recognize schools that use an innovative approach to teaching.
The awards are given by MASB – or the Michigan Association of School Boards. The Education Excellence Awards program is a statewide competition limited to Michigan schools. This year, more than 150 entries were reviewed by educators to determine which schools would be honored.
The awards are sponsored by SET/SEG School Insurance Specialists. Representatives from the winning schools were recognized at an awards luncheon on May 6.
This year, Barth received the award in the Fine Arts category for the Barth Bears News, a daily school-wide news podcast developed and broadcast by fifth and sixth grade students under the guidance of teacher Lewis Smith.
The podcast publicizes events and news at the school for both students and teachers, and is part of an emphasis placed on utilizing technology at the school.
Barth was one of three schools honored in Wayne County. The other two schools that received 2008 awards are the Southgate School District and Wayne County Regional Education Service Agency (RESA). Southgate was recognized in the Professional Development category for a Teacher Technology Specialists program, which specialists in the classroom to help teachers integrate the use of technology in instruction.
RESA took honors in Special Education for a School Wide Positive Behavior Support model, which provides effective support and consultation to schools in the implementation of school-wide positive behavior support.
Three winners are selected in each award category statewide and move on to the final phase of judging for the Michigan’s Best Award to be presented at the MASB fall conference.
Calls made to Romulus Community Schools were not returned Tuesday. Barth has been recognized for educational achievements before, and has received Blue Ribbon designation from the Michigan Department of Education.
