Deadline nears for Romulus council race

The race for city council is starting to heat up in Romulus.

The deadline to file for office is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and elections clerk Rendell Wooden said there is already shaping up to be a primary for the office of mayor and clerk.

“I’m not sure yet if we’ll need one for the city council,” said Wooden.

All seven city council seats are up, along with the mayor, clerk and treasurer.

Mayor Alan Lambert and Councilman Harry Crout are among the candidates for mayor. Wooden, Councilwoman Ellen Craig-Bragg and Raymond Cantrell are vying to be the next city clerk. All incumbent city council members-with the exception of Bragg and Crout, who cannot run for both positions-have filed their petitions, too.

Anyone interested in running for office must submit a petition with between 100 and 200 valid voters signatures by 4 p.m. on Tuesday. If there are more than twice the number of candidates for any race, a primary election would be needed in August.

Lambert said he was looking forward to continuing the work he started. He said he’s going to officially kick off his re-election campaign this week and vowed to campaign hard.

“I’m not going to take anything for granted,” he said.
