The City of Plymouth Downtown Development Authority (DDA) recently released the lists of performers who will entertain local residents and visitors both young and old every Friday throughout the summer during the Music in the Air Concert Series.
“We’re really looking forward to a good year,” said DDA Assistant Operations Director John Buzuvis, referring to the long-standing concert tradition that originally began with groups simply singing on the street corners during the weekend.
Buzuvis explained that crowds grew so large during the corner serenades that DDA officials decided to centralize the performance at Kellogg Park. Thousands of people are expected to attend the concert series. There were more than 5,000 present for the final performance of the 2007 season.
The event not only draws crowds to Kellogg Park but to local restaurants and shops, said city officials.
Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones, a blues group that has performed in the concert series the past several years will begin the 2008 season on May 30. Lady Sunshine and the X Band along with Plymouth native and rising country music star Sara Lenore are also expected to perform in the next several weeks.
Buzuvis said the series would also celebrate our Independence Day in style with a concert from Steve King and the Dittilies on July 4.
‘We have the 4th of July parade in the morning and the 4th of July picnic (in Plymouth Township) in the afternoon and the concert at night,” said Buzuvis, who added that with gas prices expected to be well more than $4 a gallon by July, it’s a good thing that locals don’t have to travel far for good entertainment.
“You can take a little vacation right here in Plymouth.”
The free Music in the Air concert series at Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth starts at 7 p.m. every Friday from June 30 through August. For a complete listing of performance groups, visit. www.downtownplymouth.org.
