Plymouth-Canton Symphony Society Director Nan Washburn leads the four-time award winning Plymouth-Canton Symphony during a local performance. The orchestra was recently honored during the annual League of American Orchestras convention.“It’s a great validation of what we do,” said Plymouth-Canton Symphony Society Director Nan Washburn.
The League of America Orchestras and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) recognized the symphony with the “Adventuresome Programming Award” during their annual convention in Denver last week.
The programming award was given to the orchestra that the judges believe best mixes in contemporary music as well as classical pieces to their performances. Washburn, who has received 17 awards by ASCAP during her career, said her focus is to give lesser-known American composers an opportunity for recognition.
“We believe premiering and highlighting the work of new American composers as a regular part of concert programming is a wonderful way to introduce our audiences to new and beautiful music,” said Washburn. “We’re thrilled.”
In addition to the award, the Plymouth group earned second place in category of orchestras with annual operating expenses of $470,000 or less. The Plymouth-Canton Symphony was the only Michigan symphony recognized during the conference. Twenty-six orchestras were recognized overall.
