Sympathy for the candidate

I felt a pang of sympathy for Charles Pugh, the former newscaster who is running for Detroit City Council, when word got out of his impending foreclosure.
I’ve met him a few times and he always seemed bright, professional and easy going (which I cannot say for all the TV types).
It sounds like he didn’t properly plan out his attempt at public office—at least financially—but he had to step down from his job in order to run.
My sympathy comes from an understanding of his position. He said he tried to get help from the bank, but was rebuffed. I’ve been in that boat; I tried to get help from my mortgage holder on a few occasions, just like I did when my credit card company unceremoniously doubled my interest rates. No luck.
Our government bailed out the banking industry virtually without asking any questions. Yet when we need help—when we want to avoid the situation facing people like Pugh—we’re told the same thing: We don’t have a program for that.
Now he is characterized as the irresponsible one. Go figure.
