Business as usual in Wayne

The Wayne City Council approved the budget last week with little additional discussion.
You could make the argument that there wasn’t much left to talk about, given that the council had met in two previous study sessions, but I would’ve liked to see some talk about reinstating the curbside leaf pick-up, rather than an extension of times at the pool and ice rink.
I know this is a minor issue to many people, but my thoughts are that if everybody is now paying higher taxes in the city, those funds should be put toward a program that everybody uses. Being able to rake leaves into the street is more than a convenience for people; now they’ll have to go out and purchase lawn bags and bag them up, essentially charging them double for a service they received for free and making them work harder for it.
The council also showed signs that they would continue to operate as they had in the past—or that they would let the administration operate that way. They approved the budget at the same meeting they set a public hearing for the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) budget.
About $2.9 million of that DDA budget goes into the already-approved City of Wayne general fund budget. That essentially means the DDA board is a rubber-stamping body and that the time anyone spends at the public hearing—perhaps bringing up better ways the funds could be spent—is wasted. They’ll be discussing money that’s already spent.
