For a few brief moments Tuesday night, Wayne Police Chief John Williams summed up his passion and dedication for his job.
That passion was not necessarily in the words he spoke during his final address to the Wayne City Council, but in the frequent pauses between them. Battling back emotion, he thanked city leaders for the confidence they had in him and the opportunity to serve in one of the finest police departments in the state.
Williams is retiring at the end of the month after five years as chief of the department. He would rather stay, but he’s stepping down now in hopes that his retirement will help save jobs within the department.
Williams is a classy guy, there’s no doubt about that. He was a good leader, too. I always liked his approach to the job; he was a compassionate man in a frequently uncompassionate field.
He said he was proud to serve his entire career for the City of Wayne; well we were proud to have him, too.
