Blink and you’ll miss it

“Hey, Scott, you missed it.”
I heard that line several times Tuesday night, after arriving late for the Northville Public School Board meeting.
The members of the board weren’t talking about the meeting itself, though, which I caught the tail end of. They talked about the huge parade of irritated teachers that are still operating under last year’s contract—which, by the way, guarantees them a six percent annual salary increase.
The state has appointed a fact-finder to help solve these contentious negotiations, but the teacher’s union is upset that the board won’t continue to negotiate while the fact finder is doing his or her work.
So they showed up to vocalize their ire and then left before the business portion of the meeting.
I’ve never been a fan of the gripe and go home philosophy.
Maybe if they had stayed around they would have learned that the district—like every other one across the state—is facing a $34 per pupil revenue cut. Seems to me that that kind of budget difficulty is a fact that’s pretty easy to find.
