Looking through the eyeglass in reverse

One of the possibilities discussed to try to reduce the state budget deficit is the elimination of townships.
The concept would see county government taking over those forms of government, since counties already provide some services there—police and road maintenance, primarily.
This is a long shot, at best, but it is a laughable concept. If we’re looking at eliminating portions of government the state shouldn’t try to shut down townships, they should wipe out the middle manager—the county government itself.
In most cases, I trust the locals a lot more than the county officials or state officials. They’re more accountable, more responsive and they usually show more common sense (unless you live in Plymouth Township).
Take the Wayne County commissioner, for example. Here we elect someone to a part-time job, pay them $70,000 a year, and then hardly ever hear from them again. Look at how county government continually slows down development and infrastructure improvement projects. Think about the mass inefficiencies we, as voters, have no control over.
If we’re looking at consolidating forms of government, we shouldn’t start at the bottom and work our way up, we should start at the top and work our way down.
