Today I want to congratulate the members of the Wayne Memorial Junior Reserve Officer Training program.
This program is about three years old now and it’s had a major positive impact in the lives of students at the school.
They recently earned some impressive recognition—their unit scored 999 out of a possible 1,000 points, giving it the highest ranking out of 111 schools in four states.
First Sgt. Steven La Haine (ret.) runs the program and he gives all of the credit to the students.
I don’t think it’s that simple. I think he exemplifies one of the perfect qualities of leadership: deflect the credit on the good stuff, take the blame for the bad stuff. He’s a major positive force, constantly pushing the kids to work harder and think about their future.
The three kids I interviewed for the story we’ll publish this week were about as organized as anyone I had ever met (much more so than I am). Only one of them was a senior, but they all had the next six years of their lives mapped out.
It’s pretty impressive watching him at work; the way he interacts with his charges. He’s tough but fair and everyone seems to like him.
Congrats again on everyone involved in this program. It the very definition of a cohesive unit, and the community is better for having it around.
