They might be Giants

Well, the Wayne-Westland Giants soccer team suffered their first defeat of the young season on Saturday.
It was my son Henry’s first foray into organized sports as a player, and mine and Lisa’s as parents.
The six-year-olds put up a valiant effort, given that the weather limited them to only two practices before their first game. They played the Cobras, who evidently had been playing together before—or at least had some team members that had previously played on some other leagues.
I lost count of the score after four or five goals; wondered about the mercy rule as it applies to young soccer teams like that after a few more.
The Giants did get a goal—even though it was put in the net by a Cobra player.
I think Henry put it best: “We didn’t have a chance out there, dad,” he said. “We were like little bunnies hopping through the forest when a hungry tiger swooped down and ate us for lunch.”
Maybe so. Everyone had fun, though, and learned a little bit about teamwork and dealing with adversity.
It was a good Saturday, all in all.
