Slavens should quit school board

“I am not using the school board for a stepping stone.”
So said Mark Slavens, incumbent school board member running for re-election in an interview for our newspaper.
So much for that idea. Slavens was appointed to a circuit court judgeship Monday, proving once again it’s not what you know but who you know.
As soon as I read that quote, I knew it was a lie. Slavens has run for just about everything he can think of during his time on the school board. Now, after he’s been appointed, he has the nerve to act surprised.
People do not get surprised by judicial appointments. You have to seek them out.
I’ve never really been a fan of Slavens, a guy who I’ve always thought is long on complaints and short on ideas, but this is unconscionable to me. A guy who will blatantly say one thing and do another is not someone I want serving on a school board. I don’t want him on the bench, either, but I can’t do anything about that.
At the very least he should drop out of the school board race. He should probably resign from his current post, too, and apologize for lying to the public.
We’ll see what he says—and does—about that.
