Pure theatrics

Bob English, the assistant city manager of Wayne, said something pretty funny Monday night.
It was almost 11 p.m. and the budget meeting had just broken up. Members of the Wayne Theater group were in the parking lot at city hall, talking about where they should go to grab a bite to eat, pondering a few places down in Westland.
“You could always go to the Red Apple,” English told them as he strolled by. “It’s right down the street.”
What makes that funny is that minutes earlier, the theater people were talking about how valuable their program is to the city in an attempt to continue their relationship with the city. One of the things the actors—who were from Novi and Adrian—mentioned was how it brings people into the city who then stay to eat in the city.
I’ve always been supportive of the theater. The plays and musicals they’ve put on at the State Wayne Theater keep getting better and better. They do a lot of other good things, here, too and, yes, they have plenty of residents in their fold now and who have taken part throughout the years.
I didn’t have space to fit the theater portion of the budget situation into the story for the paper this week, but I’m going to follow up on it for next week. The gist is this: the theater group wants to stay affiliated with the city to fund its programs. The money would be repaid through ticket sales and fundraisers.
But here’s a piece of advice: if you’re bringing a few non-residents to the city council to ask the city to front tax payer money to keep your group afloat, you shouldn’t need to be advised to keep your own money in town.
If they need any more suggestions, they serve up a pretty tasty Cajun chicken sandwich at U.S. 12 and the sliders at Jake’s on Monday night can’t be beat, no matter what WXYT 1270AM says….
